Hayward HeatPro Series Heat Pumps

Ports to connect on The Attendant: BUS1 – BUS4 or Heater H1 – H5
Ports to connect on The Attendant Mini: BUS1 – BUS2 or Heater H1 – H2

These devices should only be powered directly from the power center or breaker panel. Do not run electricity through a relay as The Attendant will control the device to turn on/off by using the communication cable.

Supported with Attendant Controller Versions 1.6.29 and higher.

Hayward HeatPro Series heat pumps can be can be controlled using legacy fireman switch/dry contact connections or digital Serial RS-485 connections. This depends on the model being installed; There are a limited number of models that support digital Serial RS485 communications.

Dry Contact/Fireman Switch connections allow The Attendant to control the heat pump on/off state.

Serial RS-485 connections not only allow The Attendant to control the heat pump on and off state, it allows The Attendant to:

  • manage the specific desired water temperature setpoint,
  • select device modes (heating or cooling),
  • read and report internal status and error codes to the mobile app!

Poolside Tech recommends using Serial RS-485 connections whenever possible, however it is not required.

Before proceeding, ensure the power to The Attendant and the heat pump is off.

Please follow all of the manufacturer’s safety and installation instructions when attempting to connect this device to The Attendant! FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN DEATH, SERIOUS INJURY, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE!

Models that currently support RS-485 communication:

(2021 Year models and newer, if the heater model is listed but does not contain an RS485 connection, refer to dry contact connections at the bottom of the article)

  • Hayward HP70HA2 Heat Pump 70k BTU
  • Hayward HP31005T HeatPro Round Heat-Cool Pump 100k BTU
  • Hayward HP50952T HeatPro Variable-Speed Heat-Cool Pump 95k BTU
  • Hayward HP51202T HeatPro Variable-Speed Heat-Cool Pump 120k BTU

Controlling these models requires connecting the black, white, and green wires from the respective connection on the heat pump to the D-, D+, and GND terminals on an available bus connector on The Attendant. These are labeled BUS1 through BUS4.

Use a proper outdoor rated 3 conductor 22 AWG cable (18 AWG for runs over 30 ft) for the connection from the heat pump to The Attendant. Route the cable through the appropriate knockouts making sure they are not shared with high voltage wiring.

The connection location on the heat pump varies by model. Please reference the following images for your particular install. (You can click or tap on each of these for a full size image.)

Models HP50952T, HP51202T, and HP70HA2
Model HP31005T

Once you have the wiring connections in place, turn the power on to The Attendant and the heat pump.

When using RS485 communication, make sure not to remove the factory-installed remote jumper in the heat pump. If this jumper is removed, the heat pump won’t operate, even with the RS485 connected.

Configuring the Heat Pump in the Poolside Mobile App

Go into Installer Mode for your site, and tap on Devices.

Select a currently-configured heat pump, or press the plus (+) button to add a new Heat Pump device

  • Brand: Hayward
  • Model: select your model
  • If your heat pump supports both heat and chill functions, ensure that “Supports Cooling” is checked.
  • After you’ve selected these options, you should see a section titled “Discovered Devices”. Tap and select your heat pump.
  • Once the heat pump has been selected, the “Heating Port” and “Number” values should automatically set.

If, for some reason, you don’t see a “Discovered Devices” section, you will need to manually set the Heating Port, Number, and HUA.

  • Heating Port Type: select BUS
  • Heating Port Number: select the BUS1-4 port where you wired the black, white, and green wires.
  • HUA: this is the Hayward HUA identification number. You’ll find this on a label affixed to the heat pump itself. Be sure to type in the value exactly how it appears on the label.

Press Apply to save the device.

Press Save on the main Installer Mode screen to save your configuration.

Dry Contact / Fireman Switch Connection

Models supported:

  • HP21105T
  • HP21205T
  • HP21405T
  • HP31105T
  • HP31205T
  • HP31405T
  • HCB1105T
  • HCB1205T
  • HCB1405T

The heater is equipped for remote control via independent 2-wire connections.

  • Heat Only models connect terminal J7 for heat control.
  • Heat/Cool models connect terminal J7 for heat control, and terminal J28 for cooling control.

These 2-wire connections get fed to one of The Attendant’s Heater (H1-H5) dry contact ports. These connections provide for remote on/off control of heating and cooling.

Use a proper outdoor rated 3 conductor 22 AWG cable (20 AWG for runs over 30 ft) for the connection from the heat pump to The Attendant. Route the cable through the appropriate knockouts making sure they are not shared with high voltage wiring.

  1. Connect the J7 (heating) and J28 (cooling, if applicable) connections to The Attendant using the dry contacts labelled H1 – H5.
  2. Turn the heat pump on. Press and hold both the “MENU” and the “+” buttons until “bo” appears. This enables the bypass operation.
  3. In bypass operation, when the relays are open the heater will be off. When the heating relay (J7) is closed, the heater will operate in heating mode. When the cooling relay (J28) is closed, the heater will operate in cooling mode. The temperature is controlled by The Attendant.
  4. The heater will shut off when both relays are open or the inlet temperature exceeds 104°F.
  5. If both relays are closed, the heater will operate in heating mode.
  6. Note: The unit must be “On” to operate in bypass mode. In bypass operation “bo” mode, the heater will only respond to The Attendant.
